Baby Sadie is Born!

This is the first of our four babies to be born this summer. My daughter Sally with her daughter Sadie.  Sally is “over the moon,” filled with gratitude to God. She says, “This is the most amazing thing…Sadie will be my little buddy, going wherever I go.  I can see motherhood will keep me on my knees.  I now appreciate you so much, Mom!”  Such joy.  Had to share it.  Thanks to all of you who have prayed.

New Honorarium

Dee has felt led to lower her honorarium and only require a minimal fee to help cover our expenses.  She really wants to be able to minister to as many women as possible and wants to minimize any barriers (cost, etc.) in being able to serve.  Dee used to charge a higher honorarium, but she is stepping out on faith to do something very different.

She would like events to cover her internal costs and traveling and housing expenses for her and her assistant. Here is a break-down for that:

A. Internal Costs – 800 to 1000 (She would ask 800)

Payment to person who puts together her complicated audio-visual presentation

Payment to book-keeper

Payment to me, who connects with the event before the event and travels with her to run the audio-visual and book-table

B. Traveling –800 or less (She would ask 800 or actual, whatever you prefer, Right now I travel with her and travel from Kearney, Ne. Dee flies from Green Bay, Wisconsin from May through October and from Kansas City from November through April. If you are near where she lives, the cost will obviously be less.)

C. Hotel – One or Two Nights for Two Rooms. Dee loves a good bed like in a Hampton Inn but doesn’t have to be a fancy hotel. (She would ask you to cover it or reimburse us if we book it, which we would be glad to do and would look for a reasonable hotel close to the event.)

Generally, therefore, you can cover everything for under 2,000 and sometimes under 1500.

Dee will make no money from these events and also contributes her preparation and travel time. However, here’s the catch! She wants to show a three to five minute video for one of the following two organizations and then take a free will offering from the women for that organization. Their offerings are tax deductible if they write a check. Dee is hoping and praying that when they see that all of this goes not to her but to these organizations that help women in enormous need that their hearts will be moved to give generously and that this will actually bring in far more than her old 3,000 honorarium did.

These are the two organizations. Both are non-profit and Dee makes nothing – and Dee would choose one for your group.

  • Dee has a heart for prison ministries. She has seen enormous spiritual hunger in the prisons. They are so excited when we come, and there is not room for all. Women who cannot get in weep at the door. The following ministry in Texas is one Dee has worked with and believes in heartily. Right now she is writing a curriculum for women prisons with the leaders of this ministry. Obviously, women prisoners cannot buy these studyguides, so we are needing to raise money to print them and share the hope of the Gospel with them – to help them be set truly free. We are doing a video curriculum that includes testimonies from prisoners who have truly found Christ and are living very different redeemed lives. See this video at http://www.discipleshipunlimited.org
  • International Justice Mission is helping free young girls, some as young as five, who have been sold into sex slavery. More women have died from this slavery in the last fifty years than all the men in all the wars in the last century. It isn’t reported because they are women. They die from having babies too young, from AIDS, and from being murdered for a lack of cooperation. It is an enormous Mafia like business. We must help. Below is a video shown at Urbana, in which Sara Groves speaks. http://vimeo.com/7267849

How we pray your committee will get excited about this and help us. Sometimes the committee can raise donations ahead of time to cover costs so that tickets can be kept low. Then women are more willing to contribute to an offering.

What thoughts did you have on the movie Blindside?

sandra_bullock_in_the_blind_side_wallpaper_2_800 For those of you who haven’t seen it, it is based on a true story of a devout Christian couple who took in a homeless teen who was failing in school and loved him and were redemptive agents in his life.  He went on to great success as a football player, but more importantly, as a caring individual. Sandra Bullock played Leigh Ann Touhy, the mother, and was hesitant to meet her because she said she had only had bad experiences with evangelical Christians. But after meeting Leigh Ann, Bullock is reported to have said in the Vancouver News:

I said to Leigh Anne when I met her, ‘One of my biggest concerns stepping into this is this whole banner thing.’ I told her it scared me because I have had a lot of experiences that haven’t been that great. But she was so honest and forthright. I feel I have finally met someone who practices but doesn’t preach. I now have faith in those who say they represent a faith, whereas before I would say, ‘Do not give me a lecture, because I think I am a pretty good human being. I may not go to church all the time, but I try to do the right thing. You are going to church and sleeping with someone else’s wife, so how are you better than me?’ I finally met someone who walks the walk, and that made me happy.”

Bullock says that the key to her decision to make the film was that the Touhys didn’t get involved in Oher’s life for any benefits that might come to them. She says she felt the film would promote a genuine selflessness. “They didn’t do it because someone was writing an article or a book or making a movie. They did it because their instinct was to give love and to reach out a hand. Everyone questioned their motives, of course, because we don’t trust anyone who does anything nice. That is the sad world we live in. But they kept going, so it makes you feel that you need to step up your game. I felt it was an inspirational story that says we are more capable than we think we are, even though we don’t really live in a world that supports the good that we can do.”

The movie did make me reflect on how living our faith can have such a huge impact on the world.

There were times when I found myself thinking, “This is a secular writer’s perspective of a Christian family, because I have to believe this family was a bit different than portrayed. The stereotype that Christians think you have to be a Republican — that at Thanksgiving dinner they would not be giving thanks — that she would have such callous close friends. But on the other hand — maybe that was all true. I’m sure there are believers of whom that is all true, but it seemed inconsistent with the main story line.

But overall, I thought the film worth seeing this Christmas season — as a family — and one to talk about. It is rare for a secular production team to take on a story about Christians and not completely distort it, so that was so refreshing.

I’d love your thoughts!

Friendship Baptist Church Event - Litchfield, CT

We had a great event at Friendship Baptist Church in Litchfield Connecticut.

The leaves were just starting to change colors, the people were friendly, and Dee and I had a wonderful time!

Unfortunately Dee left her laptop at the airport in Chicago!  Thankfully one of the flight attendants was a Christian lady and she was very helpful. :)

UPDATE:

Dee got her laptop back!
